The 'I'm from Microsoft' Tech Support Scam
The Story
Scammers call victims pretending to be from Microsoft or Windows support, claiming the victim's computer has a virus. They guide the victim through steps that appear to show problems (like viewing normal system logs) and then demand hundreds of dollars to 'fix' the non-existent issues. They often install actual malware or gain remote access to steal personal information.
🚩 Red Flags
- Unsolicited phone calls about your computer
- Requests for remote access to your device
- Demand for payment via gift cards or wire transfers
- Pressure to act immediately to 'prevent damage'
- Caller with heavy accent using generic name ('John Smith from Windows')
⚖️ The Fallout
Elderly victims have lost their life savings. The scammers often use fear and technical confusion to maintain control. Despite raids and arrests, the operations are highly profitable and continue.
📚 Lessons Learned
Microsoft will NEVER call you unsolicited. Never give remote access to your computer to someone who calls you. Legitimate tech support doesn't demand payment via gift cards.
